Tressie McMillan Cottom Kills It on on Daily Show

If you missed HASTAC Steering Committee member Tressie McMillan Cottom being interviewed by Trevor Noah on The Daily Show, you will have at least two more chances to hear her talk about her stunning book, Lower Ed:  The Troubling Rise of For-Profit Colleges in the New Economy.

Prof Cottom is not only a sociologist who studies the way for-profits prey on those most disadvantaged by the new economy but, because she spent two years working inthe for-profit industry, she reveals their tactics, dirty tricks, and the havoc wreaked on those victimized–and all at public expense.  Most of the loans that finance students and yield profits for these universities are supported by federal tax dollars.   Although President Obama spent a great deal of time regulating this profiteering industry that is much more about profits than education, the current administration not only operated one of the most fraudulent of for-profits but is moving rapidly to deregulate the industry again.  For-profit higher ed is the equivalent of exploitative for-profit charter schools.  This book is ESSENTIAL reading now.
