Dear Colleagues,
HASTAC is looking for a CoDirector and institutional partner, starting before the academic year begins. Please feel free to pass this on to anyone who might be interested.
An ideal HASTAC CoDirector understands what a social network can do, contributes to the intellectual vitality of the network, maximizes its social outreach and impact, advises wisely and creatively on issues ranging from technology to social justice to ethics, and subscribes to the principles and vision outlined in the HASTAC community standards. Ideally, the CoDirector can bring either modest financial resources or will collaborate on writing future grant proposals for HASTAC. The administrative lift is relatively light: biweekly HASTAC team meetings and a monthly meeting with the on-site program committee planning the next HASTAC conference (to be held at the University of Virginia (UVA) Library in Fall 2025). The most recent HASTAC conference was held at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn.
A few basic facts: HASTAC was founded in 2002 and has been recognized by a reviewer at the National Science Foundation as “the world’s first and oldest academic social network,” with some 18,000 network members and over 400 affiliate organizations. Thanks to a team at Dartmouth College led by HASTAC CoDirector (2016-2024) Jacqueline Wernimont, in 2022 HASTAC.org migrated to the Knowledge Commons (formerly the Humanities Commons). Thanks also to Jacqueline Wernimont of Dartmouth College, HASTAC’s membership in the Commons is fully paid until 2034.
The new CoDirector would join a team based at the Graduate Center, City University of New York, including two doctoral fellows at the Graduate Center who lead the HASTAC Scholars, the student-arm of HASTAC, consisting of some 150-200 students selected biennially across the US and abroad. Check out their Spring 2024 forum on AI and bias, or the most recent Collaborative Book Reviews to get a sense of the relevance and vibrancy of this impressive student network.
In the past, CoDirector arrangements have been relatively informal, consisting of an MOU signed by all parties. Duties are flexible. The brief application form allows you to spell out any ideas you have for HASTAC’s future and how you envision your role.
If you have any questions, you can reach out to Lauren Melendez at lmelendez@gc.cuny.edu. We look forward to hearing from interested parties no later than Friday, August 2, 2024.
Thank you for your interest in supporting the HASTAC community in this way!
Sincerely,
Cathy N. Davidson (Founder and CoDirector)
Shelly Eversley (CoDirector)
Adashima Oyo (Director of Programs and Administration)
